I Started a Small Business. Can I Deduct Everything?
Starting a small business is exciting, but it also comes with many financial decisions. One of the most common questions new business owners ask is whether every expense they incur can be deducted on their tax return. The answer may surprise you.
Max’s Answer
Not necessarily. While many business expenses may qualify as tax deductions, the expense generally must be ordinary and necessary for operating your business. Office supplies, business software, advertising costs, and certain professional services are examples of expenses that may qualify. However, personal expenses generally do not become deductible simply because you own a business.
Maintaining accurate records throughout the year is one of the best ways to support your deductions and simplify the tax preparation process.
Max’s Tip
Don’t wait until tax season to organize your records. Save receipts as you receive them and make notes regarding their business purpose while the details are still fresh in your mind.
Why It Matters
Many business owners lose valuable deductions because records are incomplete or unavailable when needed. Good recordkeeping not only helps during tax preparation but also provides a clearer picture of how your business is performing throughout the year.
